The First Friday in October …

The First Friday of the month is here and it is just possible that some folks are not aware that, for reasons previously explained, the October ArtWalk took place last week on September 30th.
The First Friday in October ...opinion music entertainment artwalk So the good news is that many of the businesses that participate in ArtWalk on a regular basis will be open this evening, Friday October 7th, to host their own mini-ArtWalks. This just goes to prove that you can come Downtown anytime and find something to do and much of it will be family friendly. Of course, for those who enjoy nightlife in the City, there are the bars and clubs.

Here are the businesses (other than bars and clubs) which have told us they will be open tonight:

  • K Space Contemporary Gallery on Starr Street
  • Treehouse Art Collective in WaterStreet Market
  • Urban Fare Cafe on William Street will have music by Jimmy Wilden
  • The Center at 505 S Water Street hosting its’ own mini ArtWalk
As we often say at ArtWalk, “come on Downtown, there’s something here for everyone”.  Tonight will be no exception and there will be a bunch of good stuff going on.
COME ON DOWNTOWN AND ENJOY!

ArtWalk – October 2011

The October ArtWalk was well attended with a large increase in attending family groups no doubt due to the Time Warner sponsored showing of “Toy Story 3″ in La Retama Park. Musical entertainment was provided prior to the movie by Oldies 93.9

Check out a movie of the event here or by selecting our YouTube Channel from the icon at the top of the page.

ArtWalk Map and Venue List

Check out the revised ArtWalk map created by Ian of Whetstone Graphics. This latest version shows the revised bus route which, once the timings are firmly established tomorrow evening, will be adopted from November 4th as RTA Route#70 – ArtWalk Express. This will provide a reliable, timed, free service to eight official bus stops thus paving the way to greater free parking options during ArtWalk. Timings will be published on the next version of the map and also on this web site so you will be able to plan when and where to park in the knowledge that you can catch a bus back to your vehicle at the end of the evening.
The DTown tram will continue to wind its’ merry way around Central Downtown with local band HOBO on board returning to La Retama Park approximately every 15 minutes to connect with the RTA ArtWalk Express.
More good things coming folks – stay tuned!

October ArtWalk – News and Information Part #2

So – moving on, having dealt with the undoubtedly controversial concept of October ArtWalk occurring on Friday September 30th oy vey, let’s concentrate on what is happening on “October ArtWalk” – September 30th.

October ArtWalk – News and Information Part #1

For three months now, since I revealed the ArtWalk poster for the first quarter of our annual season with dates of August 5th, September 2nd, and SEPTEMBER 30th, I have been battling with entrenched opinion regarding the necessity to retain the integrity of our year long campaign to brand the Downtown ArtWalk as “First Friday ArtWalk”. Now you will not find anyone in Corpus Christi with more time and energy invested in the planning, execution, and success of First Friday ArtWalk than myself (he said in all modesty) however I do suspect that I may have just a wee bit more flexibility than many when it comes to necessary variations on a popular theme. Here then is the “reason d’etre” for my support of “abandoning” First Friday on this one occasion; actually it occurs again in September and December 2012 but we’ll cross those bridges when we come to them.

When we launched the “First Friday ArtWalk” campaign the jury was still out as to whether this was a worthwhile event or just a storm in a tea cup; one year on, with attendance hitting 2,700 (July), ArtWalk had caught the attention of everyone from the Mayor to the mailman who delivers Downtown.  We had dabbled with radio but success really came with the adoption of Television advertising.  As our ArtWalk adverts ran on Channel 6 and Time Warner Cable there was a perceptible jump in Facebook fans, email newsletter subscribers, and people on the streets of Downtown each First Friday. By July of 2011 the Marina had been tasked with arranging a monthly Market to be hosted on the Lawrence Street T-Head every First Saturday of the month and it was noted by the CVB that some crazy Scotsman had been arranging monthly walks over the Harbor Bridge each First Sunday and so was born the Corpus Christi First Initiative .

Corpus Christi First, dear readers, is going to be huge, it will ultimately overshadow the ArtWalk although I am certain that ArtWalk will remain an integral and extremely important part of that entire event.
The current anchor events are:

… but we are working on additions so stay tuned for breaking news.

These are not the only events to take place in Corpus Christi but they have been seized upon as the basis for an out of town marketing campaign to encourage tourist traffic to visit Corpus Christi ANY first weekend and find lots of free, fun, family entertainment to occupy their time. And, as everyone should know, tourists means spending dollars, which leads to sales tax, which leads to City investment, which leads to private sector investment, which leads to revitalization of our Downtown District, which means – SUCCESS!

I rest my case for the “apparent abandonment” of First Friday for October.

Time Warner ArtWalk Movie in the Park

Time Warner ArtWalk Movie in the Parkopinion film entertainment artwalk

Crowds in La Retama Park

It seems that our enthusiasm for the inclusion of  ”film” as a component of the ArtWalk is not shared by everyone. Although we would very much like the medium of film to be included at a more “arty” level we do not currently have the resources to add this element to ArtWalk ourselves. So, although appreciative of the constructive criticism expressed on Facebook, we have gratefully accepted an offer from Time Warner Cable to sponsor a “commercial” movie in the park on September 30th. This does not mean that ArtWalk has been hi-jacked, it will not change the overall ambience we have created, and there will still be something for everyone happening Downtown on ArtWalk night.

Indeed it will be business as usual at ArtWalk from 5:30 until dusk (approx 7:40pm) with art, food, and produce vendors taking their usual places in the park; they may even stay open during the movie. Entertainment and kids activities will be provided by Time Warner and the prize draw will take place barely 20 minutes later than usual at the end of the movie. For those who do not, for whatever reason, want to attend a movie in the park there is no more reason to boycot ArtWalk than there is to boycott Downtown just because you don’t approve of bars and clubs. The ArtWalk has many different aspects which can be appreciated all over the Downtown area from The Art Museum in S.E.A. Town, to the WaterStreet enclave, to The Center at 505 S Water (Tango Tearoom complex). Sign up for the monthly newsletter (see form at top right of the website) to receive advance notice of ArtWalk events and activities.

Once again, although appreciative of all constructive criticism, the ArtWalk is an attempt to appeal to a widely diverse demographic and we strive to achieve this aim by the inclusion of many and various forms of art and entertainment which we accept may not all appeal to everyone. So open your minds and come on Downtown to enjoy the parts of ArtWalk which do appeal to you – there is something here for everyone!

September ArtWalk and other weekend events

The weather forecast for the weekend predicts “a chance of thunderstorms” and temperatures in the mid 90′s. The Corpus Christi First weekend activities will be going ahead as planned and hopefully many of you will come on Downtown and support the efforts of your local businesses, the Marina, the Downtown Management District and the Convention & Visitors Bureau who have put together another weekend of fabulous, free, fun entertainment.

Here are some definitions to help you decide to support First Friday ArtWalk, Saturday Marina Market Days, and Sunday BridgeWalk without a Bridge:

Corpus Christi:
a City suffering from a prolonged drought, much in need of some rain which, because of the local ambient temperatures, falls pleasantly warm from the heavens onto its’ grateful umbrella and towel toting population whilst they are out for the weekend enjoying all that “Corpus Christi First“ venues and events have to offer both outdoors and indoors!

Ambient Temperature:
the temperature of the surrounding environment.

Drought:
a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall; a shortage of water resulting from this.

Events:
planned public or social occasions

Indoors:
the area or space inside a building : the rain makes indoors feel so warm and safe.

Rain:
moisture condensed from the atmosphere that falls visibly in separate drops seldom resulting in damage to the population (unless associated with extreme weather)

Towel:
a piece of thick absorbent cloth or paper used for drying oneself or wiping things dry.

Venues:
places where something happens, esp. an organized event such as an ArtWalk, a Saturday Market, or a Sunday walk along Shoreline.

Umbrella:
a device consisting of a circular canopy of cloth on a folding metal frame supported by a central rod, used as protection against rain or sometimes sun.

Just saying folks:
Come on Downtown this weekend come rain or shine and bring your umbrellas either way!
